There’s ways to improve CTR (clickthroughs), optimising pages as well as rules to stop getting banned. Shoemoney is a millionaire and understands how it works and provides the tips below.

Shoemoney Money

I reviewed Shoe Money a while back, he started off making 1 dollar a day until 6 months later he was making huge amounts. The questions and answers seem to expand outside of Adsense, but is still useful in relation to building a site.

Don’t let one adsense account make too much money.
Setup separate corporate entities and get different bank accounts/ein for each. It’s much safer to have 10 corporate entities bringing in 10k each/month then 1 bringing in 100k. All someone has to do is complain about copyright or whatever or any of the other horror stories we have heard about getting shutoff from adsense and boom your whole business is out. Setup multiple corporate entities and you will have safteynets. I get a new P.O box for each company then have them all forward to our main office.

Site Profits
Take current profits from last month and multiply by 40. That should give you a good estimate of what a company is worth. If its worth it sell it.

Set goals and keep them.
When I first started with adsense my goal was to make 273.98 per day. I had it taped all over my house. It drove my wife and friends nuts. I had that number in my head and wouldn’t stop until I started making at least that. Once I was averaging that per day for 60 days I doubled it and so on and so fourth. Never settle. I know allot of webmasters who made there goal and just idled.

Everyone is targeting high paying ads and building a site around it.
My business model has been to target high SEARCHED for phrases and then try to make the pay as much as possible with adsense. It’s a very interesting game trying to balance keyword density for traffic and keyword density for profit.

Be patient.
There will be massive spikes with adsense but unless you have drastically changed your web page don’t worry about it too much. This is an extremely volatile market we are making money in.

Banning Sites in Competition Filter
I have never ever banned sites on my page using the compeititon filter from google. If I feel they are not pulling good ads then I change the keyword density to pull better ones. I *think* that google will ALWAYS try to display the highest paying ads for your site for your keyword density. This is purely my theory and its just based on common sense.

Weekly Routine
1) Register at least 10 new domains (and have ideas for each domain)
2) Put up at least 1 new website. I call this part planting seeds.

Once a website gets over 1k uniq visitors a day I will put up subscriptions/donation/adsense/adbrite depending on what it is.

Domains
I have only had success for .com but that is all I register.

Niche vs Traffic
In my opinion traffic is the easy part. Its finding the niche or service that is the hard part.

Selling or Dropshipping
I try to dropship everything I can and not have inventory to manage but sometimes if the profit is there that is unavoidable. Most data cables can be bought for under 1$ and if you buy bulk you can literally get them for pennies (quantities of 1,000 or more). I usually make a 75% profit on physical goods including shipping, handling, and packaging.

Do you use your existing sites to generate traffic for your new sites?
Totally. I think its very important to stay with one vector and slowly branch out into related subjects.

Participation in Google Adsense

The rules say:

  • Do you have a website? You’ll need one in order to participate. If you don’t have one, you can create one using Blogger. Read our tips for creating great content so that you’ll attract users and advertisers to your site.
  • Are you at least 18 years old? As noted in our Terms and Conditions, we can only accept applications from applicants who are over 18.
  • Does your site comply with our programme policies? Check that your site complies with our policies before submitting your application. Keep in mind that we may change our policies at any time, and according to our Terms and Conditions, it’s your responsibility to keep up to date with them.
  • Have you owned your site for 6 months? In some locations, including China and India, we require publishers to have owned their sites for 6 months. We’ve taken this step to ensure the quality of our advertising network and protect the interests of our advertisers and existing publishers.

How come?

Not sure of the real reasons, could be due to copied content or MFA adsense sites but I thought it isn’t based just in Asia regions only.

How to get accepted

These steps may work for you, sign up to sites.google.com and start writing a few articles. Then use the site as a base and apply for Adsense. I think it works well because it’s hosted on their own servers. Starting a Hubpage and using that may also work.

What is Interest Based advertising?

Currently, advertisers use placement targeting to display ads on specific sites and pages in the AdSense network. Placement targeted ads reach users visiting specific sites, independent of their interests.

Interest based advertising reaches users based on the sites that they’ve browsed and the interest categories that they choose. Interest based ads are displayed to users based on their specific interests, rather than at a specific site or page. Currently YouTube also uses interest-based advertising to show relevant ads on its site.

Yahoo has been doing search targeted behavioral targeting for over 7 years, Facebook has revolutionized interest targeting and MSN Ad Center has been doing demographic targeting since its launch so there is something positive about these Adsense changes.

What Changes do I need to make?

At the moment, as a publisher you don’t need to make any changes except to review your current Privacy Policy which takes into account the usage of the new advertising feature by 8th April 2009.

What Impact will it have on Me?

This is unknown and I’ll update this post when I see results. I do think that this meddles with the logic of why bloggers, especially network bloggers do stick to niches of interest – to get relevant advertising alongside content.

It makes sense to use Adsense since it’s a reliable publisher and revenue can be quite high, depending on the number of hits in relation to page views.

Google Adsense Recommendations

  • Don’t place Adsense on the homepage of your landing site, keep it on your inner pages. By doing so, you’ll lose conversions and visitors as it’s best visitors check out your site first, bookmark pages, send to friends, subscribe etc., before clicking ads that leave your site.
  • Make the most out of the Alternative Adverts. When setting up an advert, the default “Public Ads Service” is setup so that if no related ads are available then Google will show up their own…and you won’t get paid for it. You can easily create a php link and page which displays a link/image to another site that you own.
  • Use Adsense in the right place. Optimising your ads and working out the daily conversion rates, but this is about making money and other advertising may offer you better revenue.
  • Blend adverts with content. You should blend your ads, so that it looks like part of the content.
  • Don’t populate the site with Ads. The point is to keep a user to the site, rather than drive them away by clicking your Adsense adverts. Make sure the RSS subscribe buttons are clear and on every page, keep users on the site.

Google Adsense has been good to me over the years, I put it on sites and it was making me enough money to pay for the monthly server and domains.

Showing Competition

The problem being it shows my competitors, encouraging people to click. Also opens in the same window, losing my readers…perhaps forever. Also people are clued up by using Google Adsense now, people know that by clicking on an advert you are redirected somewhere else and also the sub-consious part that the site owner would earn money if you clicked…and we wouldn’t want that, would we!

Problems with Adsense

My many complaint is that I could send 1000’s of clicks to competitors adverts and be paid small change.

Finding Alternatives

  • So the Google adverts have been removed from this site, instead replaced by monthly adverts on the right side of all pages (contact me for details) and better monetisation through the site and it’s articles.

Of course Adsense is great for startup sites, but for the long term future I’d recommend NOT using it as a source of income…it’s just too unstable.

Opensourcefood Site

It’s a site where users can submit, tag and take photos of recipes. To date there are over 2000 recipes (and growing) on OSF, each with a picture, all created by the community.

As you can see from the graphs below it’s a popular site:

I guess the time comes when someone offers you enough money to prise a favourite site out of your hands. I really thought Yongfook would of kept the site though as his passion is food and the site was run more as a hobby and less for financial gain.

Source of Income

Since 2008 I’ve learnt that creating sites can be fun, but there needs to be some benefit at the end of the day. I saw he implemented Amazon type adverts, selling cooking products and then finally Google Adsense. Google Adsense is a beast and at times a pain, you can be sending many clicks to your competitors for only a few cents.

Cubestat rates it as making $50+ a day from Adsense. It’ll be interesting what source of income the new owner uses for the site.

He made no mention of how much he sold it for, I bet it was quite a bit since the investor is high profile and probably made him an offer. I’d personally price it at $80,000 which may be considered on the low side but the amount of revenue gained from the site is minimal and the competition is huge. The price would be mainly for the coding, the cool sounding url (which I see is now re-directed) and user fan base.

Although my thinking is users may be put off that this isn’t a Yongfook site anymore, the url has changed to something less memorable and that their contact details have been sold on.
